What version of Java should I install?

JavaScore requires a minimum of Java 6 to run (sometimes also called version 1.6).

As of this writing (December 2009), Java 7 is in beta release for Windows, but has NOT been testing with Javascore. You can get the latest version of Java for Windows at www.java.com.

On the Macintosh side, any OS X operating system (ie Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard) should work fine (in fact the latest version of Javascore was developed on Snow Leopard). You may want to do a "software update" to get the latest Java installed.

I What are common tips for installing/running on Windows?

Javascore has been extensively tested and run on Windows XP and VIsta. Javascore has been extensively tested and used with Windows Vista and XP. The author has not tested it with Windows 7 but it should run fine. For both Vista and Windows 7, you will need to be an "administrator" to install it.

On Vista, you have to turn OFF the access control security thingy (sorry I forget the exact name. And you must be running with Administrator privileges.

I What are common tips for installing/running on Mac?

On the Macintosh side, any OS X operating system (ie Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard) should work fine (in fact the latest version of Javascore was developed on Snow Leopard). You may want to do a "software update" to get the latest Java installed.

One significant install note: the javascore installer cannot install a cool shortcut on the Macinstosh desktop. So you have to create one yourself. If you haven't done that yet, then you run javascore but double-click'ing on the "JavaScore.jar" file in the install directory.

Where the heck are the reports stored?

When you create and save a regatta file, JavaScore will use the directory in which you saved the regatta file as the parent directory for files related to that regatta. For reports, JavaScore creates a "reports/" subdirectory and then another subdirectory with the same directory name as the regatta's file name. So if you regatta is saved as "myregatta.regatta", then the reports are stored in "reports/myregatta/".

The "reports/myregatta" subdirectory contains (among others) the following files:

  • regatta.html - is the table of contents, its the file that is loaded when you do a "Reports | Show Reports".
  • <myregatta>.html - this contains the overall series standings.
  • <myregatta>_race<x>.html - the results of individual races
  • proof<x>.html - a "proofing" report containing each finish for race <x> in the order entered in the Finish Dialog

Each of these files is completely re-created each time the regatta is scored when using javascore - the scoring is done anytime anything might have changed the results or the report format.
