Updates for April 29 (Monday, racing day)

Updates:

Today started weird, got downright depressing and ended with back-handed good news.

First the weird: We drew port-entry and the very first start.  (Excuse the match racing techie talk).  Foxtrot (10 minutes to our start) went up, we set our watches for entering in six minutes later but then about 3 minutes later a sailboat comes out of nowhere (flying a yellow flag) and starts attacking and yelling at us.  After telling them to stop interfering with our entry (this had no effect) we looked back at the committee boat, which ... to our utter astonishment the RC was flying both a "1" pennant and a "Papa" flag (this means they thought we had missed our entry and were inside 4 minutes to the start).  We say "what the ...", popped our red flag and tried to get away from the attacking boat.  They took a penalty (to my surprise) and hit us.... and shortly thereafter the RC signaled postponement.  Praise the lord and pass the sugar.  Very strange.  We had a restart and an equally interesting race which we ended up losing by about 3 feet and multiple luffing battles and a pair of match round-ups under spinnaker.

Downright depressing: Unfortunately that's the best story for the day.  Net is we started 0-5, had trouble with boat speed all day, and when that wasn't a problem we tangled of either boat handling and just plain old bad luck Example of bad luck: 1 boat behind, early in first beat, wind average 12-15 knots, in a tacking dual, gaining significantly each tack, opponent tacks, we tack to clear, instantly hit a dead spot maybe 2 knots of wind and 60 degree header, and next thing you know, opponent is 1/2 leg ahead.  Arg.

The backhanded good news: while we raced 5 flights, all in the same boat.  The other team that raced 4 flights in that boat also did not win a race, so the boat we were in was 0-9 on the day.  We've decided that today just flat out did not happen and we'll drink a bit more tonight than perhaps we would have if we were 5-0 (which is what Lyz* Baylis started with - we might need new drinking buddies for tonight's escapades)... and start again tomorrow.

*that's how they have her listed on the score sheet, so she is now being called "Leeezzz"

I have no idea what the other finishes are, check cncalpe.com
